Animal Referral Hospital is pleased to offer a position for a GP nurse to join our team. The position would suit an energetic, motivated nurse with a minimum of 2 years clinical experience in General practice, who is interested in emergency and critical care medicine.

The role of a trainee Emergency & critical care veterinary nurse has been developed to support the smooth transition from general practice to specialty nursing.

The object of the trainee ECC nurse is to provide the individual with the opportunity to put essential emergency & critical care theory into developing specialty knowledge, gain valuable practical skills and competency in a relevant and real organisation.

Our workplace offers this knowledge and skill to an individual who has aspirations of career progression in emergency & critical care and helping them achieve those learning outcomes. The trainee nurse can also get a perspective of the care a patient receives on other departments and how each impacts the patient’s overall care.

Under the mentorship of our teams ECC technicians/nurses & vets, the program includes rotation through day-time, night-time, evening and weekend shifts. Five weeks annual leave and above award salary is offered.

The Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Essendon has a 24 hour per day, 7 days a week, dedicated emergency and critical care (ECC) service. The hospital is staffed with an outstanding team of emergency veterinarians and nurses working alongside specialists in ECC / internal medicine and surgery. We aim to provide a responsive, comprehensive emergency and referral service to Victorian veterinarians, their clients and their pets. We provide high professional and clinical standards, which are tempered with genuine care and compassion.

About Your New Role
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to;
• Admission & triage of emergency patients
• Forward planning and providing direct and individualised patient care for critically ill patients
• Performing diagnostics and treatments
• Plan and perform anaesthesia for ill or unstable patients
• Record all care information concisely and accurately
• Work directly under the guidance and support of veterinarians and senior nurses
• Liaise knowledgeably and accurately with staff and clients.

Essential Attributes
• Minimum of 2 years of full-time experience in general practice post qualification
• Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or higher
• A professional, energetic and positive demeanour
• Ability to work efficiently with initiative in a face-paced environment
• Excellent communication skills
• Well-developed organisational skills
• Interest in emergency critical care medicine
