Signs of spring allergies in pets
Itchy pets will often scratch, itch, rub on the carpet, scoot their bottoms or lick and chew their paws. Their skin may be red and inflamed or have a dry, flaky or patchy appearance. Itchy or smelly ears can be painful and recurrent ear infections are often a result of an underlying allergy. Just like people, some pets suffer from allergies and these can be triggered by environmental factors (grasses, dust or pollen), food sensitivities or fleas.

What to do if your pet is itchy
If your pet is itchy, speak with our Greencross Vets team for advice because it’s important to catch it early. In the early stages, a gentle medicated shampoo may soothe sensitive or irritated skin. If your pet continues to scratch, lick or chew excessively they may damage their delicate skin. If left untreated, this can cause a secondary bacterial or yeast infection which may make it even worse. Medication may be required to bring the infection under control and provide relief for their discomfort. Check out our five tips on how to soothe itchy skin and book an appointment with our friendly vet team today.
Protect your family from fleas, ticks and worms
Parasites like fleas, ticks and worms love the warmer weather and it is important to protect your pet and your family. Many dogs and cats are highly allergic to fleas and just a single flea bite can cause intense itching, redness and discomfort, often at the base of their tail. Cats groom themselves regularly and so often it’s tricky to spot the fleas, even if they may be hiding in your home. Please take care when treating your cats for fleas because some dog products are harmful to cats. Watch our short video to learn more about fleas and remember, we’re here to help.
