Adult Dogs

Caring for your adult dog

Taking care of your dog’s health is important for their long-term wellbeing. Just like us, they require regular health checks, a nutritious diet, and adequate exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Adult dog health care is different from that of a puppy or senior dog.

Dog’s age much faster than we do – approximately one year for every seven human years. A veterinary health check every six months is strongly recommended for your dog’s wellbeing and to identify any health issues that may require treatment. Preventative health measures are the best way to make sure your adult dog maintains good health into their seniority.

During a health check, your local veterinarian will perform a nose-to-tail examination that includes the following:

  • skin and coat
  • teeth and gums
  • ears
  • eyes
  • feet and nails
  • heart and lungs
  • muscles
  • bones and joints
  • lymph nodes

This is an optimal time to ask your vet about any concerns or queries you have. These visits are a great opportunity to learn more about regular worming, flea control, nutrition, and dental hygiene.

You can protect your adult dog’s health well into their senior years by following these simple tips:

  • get regular health checks for your dog
  • take your dog for walks
  • ensure your dog gets regular exercise, i.e. playing fetch
  • feed them a premium diet
  • keep an eye on any changes, i.e. lumps, coat condition, appetite, behaviour and more
  • have adequate fencing to prevent escape
  • pay lots of daily attention to your dog
  • recognise the need for diet changes as your dog ages
  • keep up-to-date with parasite prevention and vaccinations

Greencross Vets have developed the Healthy Pets Plus program as a proactive way to prevent illness and maintain your pet’s health for life. We believe that preventing problems is more effective than treating illness, so the Healthy Pets Plus program includes free vaccinations, free unlimited health checks, discounts on premium food, parasite prevention, and more.
