Benefits Of Grooming Your Cat

Most cats do a pretty good job of keeping themselves clean and well groomed. However, cats with long hair need our help to avoid matted fur and fur balls. Regular grooming for long or medium haired cats is important for your cat’s health and wellbeing, as well as their appearance. An untended coat can become long, matted, and uncomfortable for your pet. Grooming helps rid the coat of shed hair and dead skin while spreading natural oils. Clipping ensures the maintenance of a comfortable coat length to match the seasons and ensure your pet’s comfort. We recommend that you make grooming a regular part of your pet’s healthcare routine.

Regular, professional cat grooming can help reduce problems such as:

  • Heat stress
  • Ticks and parasites (easier to find when their coat is short)
  • Unnoticed lumps
  • Irritation to the skin and paws
  • Painful mats and knots
  • Excessive hair shedding
  • Fur balls

Why does my cat need regular grooming?

Regular grooming / brushing of your cat’s coat is essential for their overall health and wellbeing. Long and medium-haired cats require more regular grooming and sometimes clipping to keep their coats in good condition.

By grooming your cat, you can also control cat hair in the house. Instead of your cat shedding hair wherever they walk, you can immediately dispose of groomed hair. When you groom your cat, you’re in a better position to notice any physical changes including lumps, bumps, or parasites such as fleas.

Gently comb and brush their coat in the direction of hair growth until tangle free. Various types of combs and brushes are available for different coats and degree of matting. If your pet has matted fur, please contact our Greencross Vets team for advice.

Do all cats need grooming?

While all cats can benefit from regular grooming / brushing, long-haired cats need grooming more often to keep their coats in good condition and avoid hair matting Some may require clipping. Cat clipping can be done at your local Greencross Vet, but depending on your cat’s nature, sometimes sedation may be required.  If this is case, your feline friend will always be monitored throughout the grooming procedure to ensure their comfort and safety.

If you have any questions about your cat’s wellbeing or to learn more about our cat grooming options, contact your nearest Greencross Vets today.
